DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION (DEI)
The Kiwanis Club of Hicksville, Inc. and its foundation, the Kiwanis Foundation of Hicksville, Inc. are dedicated to the principles of DIVERSITY, EQUITY and INCLUSION (DEI).
DEI Principles:
Through our membership initiatives, we strive to be inclusive so that we best represent our community.
This diversity offers us a variety of perspectives and approaches to address community issues and needs. The history of Kiwanis International, like many of the service organizations didn’t always embrace DEI principles. Our club was among the earliest clubs to admit women (1987) once Kiwanis International opened membership in the summer of 1986. We have continued to create a more current history of diversity, equity and inclusion. Women currently compose more than 50% of our membership. As the demography of our village changes, it is significant that now Asian and South Asians have joined as members.
Our commitment to “CHANGING THE WORLD, ONE CHILD, ONE COMMUNITY AT A TIME” derives from addressing inequities; it is also about diversity of needs and perspectives and it is about providing a place for people to join us “at the table.” In our service projects we are keenly aware that DEI is embedded in our response to food insecurity or access to higher education or critical housing needs, keeping us conscious of the particular needs and circumstances of our neighbors. Kiwanis is committed to encouraging the living of the Golden Rule and promoting human and spiritual values. We also work to address inequities by developing “a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.”
We further understand that DEI principles require diligence and focus, and are ongoing and represent the brightest future for our Kiwanis club and our communities.
